Okay, this is Mac-like and some will think cool, but in general this just contributes to complaint above in that unknowing users will be railroaded into service offerings by not knowing how to avoid them. IвЂ™m sorry, but I donвЂ™t want Dell to be my vendor for support, cloud storage, video chat, remote access and video rental.

At least they left the Windows key alone instead of doing something foolish like they did a few years ago (moving it to the top of the keyboard). The overall shape of the keyboard is changed, with a few keys moving from the top row over to the right hand side as a single column. For most users, however, this is a welcome change, because they now have easy access to things like volume control, CD/DVD controls and toggles for wireless and external display. This could be a huge downer for folks who ACTUALLY used the function keys. The Function keys now live up to their names in that they require the user to use them in conjunction with the function (fn) button in order to access them. The keyboard has undergone some interesting changes. I actually think this may come back to haunt them since this can actually introduce torque to a port that is known to fail under stress from tugging or repeated connect/disconnect events. The power supply is a new generation unit that is smaller and has a hex-like insert so that the insert cannot roll around once inserted into the port. This unit offers an integrated camera and digital microphone (both located in the bevel above the display). Analog headphone, mic and card reader slots have found their way to the front of the unit. Power, ethernet, USB and VGA are all on the sides. Dell has fallen into the paths of HP/Compaq, Lenovo (certain models) and Apple in moving everything to the sides of the unit instead of the rear. The unit is easy on the eyes with itвЂ™s glossy finish (that is, until you put your grimy hands on it), smooth lines, and вЂњmore seamlessвЂќ (e.g., the touchpad surface is molded into the shell). DonвЂ™t consider this to be authoritative in any way. IвЂ™m just wanting to pitch my two cents while I have the machine in my hands. I have not gone out and read reviews on this product (IвЂ™m sure they are both numerous and extensive) nor read any of the product documentation. I normally deal with their small business laptops (Latitude, Vostro and Precision), so this was somewhat unusual for me. This model was released earlier this year, so itвЂ™s a вЂњyoung childвЂќ in the Dell product line. He asked that I put it through an initial setup, and this gave me a chance to lay hands on this model for the first time. After a couple of months of watching prices, a friend of mine chose this model as a home computer for his wife and young children.
